About the Schedule
Civic Memorial High School is excited to offer its students a new schedule for the 2013-2014 school year. This schedule is a pilot and will afford students the opportunity to meet with their teachers 4 days per week. By meeting 4 days per week, students will gain instructional minutes in their courses. However, we realize labs are an important part of the school day; therefore, we have built 2 block days into the schedule per week. This schedule will provide students with the benefits of both a traditional and block schedule. Finally, we feel as though this schedule will benefit students as we transition to the more rigorous Common Core State Standards in both Math and English Language Arts.
Weekly Schedule
- Students will meet for a traditional 7 period schedule on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday.
- A 4 block schedule will run on Wednesday and Thursday.
- The "4th block" will run all 5 days of the week in order to accommodate certain courses and to stabilize lunch periods.
- Block classes are arranged so that students can have a "consistent" lunch period.
Daily Schedule
- Classes will be 50 minutes long on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday.
- The "4th block" will run 50 minutes on Monday, Tuesday and Friday but will be 60 minutes long on Wednesday and Thursday.
- On Wednesday and Thursday block classes will be 90 minutes long.
- Students will be released at 3:20p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Friday but will be released at 2:47p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Why is the school transitioning to a new schedule?
- We feel that we can better meet the needs of the students by increasing their instructional minutes and contact time with their teachers per class. Also, this schedule will allow students to meet with their teachers 4 days per week as opposed to 2 or 3 days per week on the block schedule. This will benefit your student as we transition to the more rigorous Common Core State Standards. The new standards aim to provide clear, consistent academic benchmarks with “fewer, clearer and higher” academic standards for essential learning and skills. Our district has implemented the Math Common Core Standards in grades kindergarten through tenth grade this year, and we will implement in grade eleven next year. Our district is implementing the English Language Arts standards in grades kindergarten through tenth grade next year, which is why we feel it is imperative to change the schedule for the upcoming school year.
- Please visit www.corestandards.org for more information.
- The new schedule will not affect your student's graduation status because credits are being adjusted. We have reduced both the total required credits and a student's earning potential. (If your student was already behind on credits, he/she will still be behind)
- On "Block Days" (Wednesday and Thursday), we will meet the state requirement for Average Daily Attendance; therefore, we have flexibility in releasing students early. Block classes are 90 minutes, which is a significant chunk of time to ensure students instructional needs are being met. By releasing students early, it will give teachers an opportunity to collaboratively plan instruction, conduct staff meetings, and attend professional development workshops without impacting instructional time with students.
- Students who ride the bus will be released at 3:20p.m., therefore, they will have a short study hall before boarding the bus. Students who drive or get picked up will be allowed to leave at 2:47p.m.
- The school counselors have already met with each student individually and afforded them the opportunity to select the class they would like to have removed from their schedule for next year.
- Once your student has been approved, the School Counseling Department will post an Early Bird P.E. list on the DE Store window.
- Early Bird P.E. forms must be turned in to the Counseling Office by 3:20p.m. on March 22, 2013.
